On February 24th, Reach The World will hold its 10th Annual Benefit Dinner at the Boathouse in Central Park.

After a friend’s recent introduction, Cynthia and I became involved with this education non-profit that helps students at severely under-funded elementary and secondary schools in New York City and Chicago learn about world geography and the cultural diversity. Cravings is an enthusiastic supporter of cultural exploration, and it has been so satisfying to see how Reach the World is expanding children’s horizons.

RTW connects classrooms to volunteers who are studying, working or living abroad. All RTW volunteers post updates on their journeys to the RTW website weekly. RTW also connects each classroom with a traveler through video chats twice a semester and arranges school visits for travelers visiting or living in the New York City area. Among them are a college student from California studying international relations in Jordan and a teacher from the South Bronx on a sailing expedition across the Pacific Ocean.

At the beginning of the program, students are asked to draw a map of the world to assess their understanding of geography. I adore these maps, as they are lenses into each child’s world. At the end of the program, students are again asked to draw a map of the world, only now with their newfound knowledge.

The benefit, which will include dinner, entertainment by Magician Steve Cuiffo, live and silent auctions, is a worthwhile event that changes childrens’ lives. Plus, the Cheng Sisters are attending, so come join us!
