As part of the programming for the American Museum of Natural History’s new exhibit, Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World, there will be a panel discussion titled “Curry Economics: Food as a Driving Force of Economic Development” on January 14th.
The discussion will focus on food’s power to push economic expansion, industrial development, and geopolitical competition. The panel will consist of Tom Standage, author of An Edible History of Humanity; Eric Tagliacozzo, author of Secret Trades, Porous Borders: Smuggling and States Along a Southeast Asian Frontier; and Julie Sahni, whose books include Classic Indian Cooking. Sasha Issenberg, author of The Sushi Economy, will moderate.
Among other topics, guests will hear about how the legendary Silk Road, a major trade route for foodstuffs such as spices, became an information network that spreads ideas and bridges cultures.
