I’m stuck on Pita Joe's purple Joe, a simple sandwich of grilled eggplant, sliced hard boiled egg and hummus on a whole wheat or white pita. You can add lettuce, Israeli salad, pickles or hot peppers. All the ingredients at Pita Joe are so fresh and clean, you feel good eating them and you feel good after. For lunch, a half purple Joe and soup are just $6.75. As the weather is getting chillier, soup really hits the spot, so this combo is ideal. Besides the regular red lentil tomato soup, there’s always a special with delicious aromatic spices. Recent specials have included chicken vegetable and sweet potato. Plus, Pita Joe has a fidelity card that gets you a free pita after ten purchases. Score!

The egg and eggplant pita at Maoz is also good, though the texture of the eggplant different because it’s deep-fried. It’s probably slightly tastier because deep-fried goods always taste better. But you definitely don’t feel as clean or good as you do afterward, the way you feel after eating the Purple Joe.
