The juicy, flavorful chicken from this Algerian street vendor is worth the trip to the far east end of York Avenue. Dark and white meat cooked with curry, black and green olives, jalapeño and other “secret spices” are covered in tin foil to stew while the meat absorbs the aroma and juices. I like it on a sandwich, so the pita soaks up the delicious sauce while the lettuce, tomato, onions and cilantro act as a salad bed for the chicken. White, barbeque and hot sauces complete this $3.50 bundle of heaven. Still savoring the juices afterward, I don’t feel weighed down, the way I might with other street fare. He’s there Monday through Friday from 11am to 4pm.

So glad you finally made it to the cart, Celia – it is my default go-to lunch when I’m uptown.
I actually prefer any meat I’m getting there to be in platter form, but served on top of sliced pita – soaking up in much the same way as in the sandwich, just in greater quantity. But any way you order there, it’s hard to go wrong.
