Jian Guo 328 is a casual eatery serving home-style Shanghainese food. The restaurant is small and narrow so seating is a bit cramped, and for lunch you’ll have to come early to avoid the wait, but I love coming here for all the Shanghainese dishes that I grew up eating; from deep-fried river shrimp to stinky tofu, the cuisine is prepared with care. Stinky tofu, usually either steamed or deep-fried, has always been a favorite of mine. At Jian Guo 328, they’ve wrapped pieces of stinky tofu in paper-thin yuba (tofu skins) and fried them, so you get the best of both worlds: a crispy exterior and a tender interior. Dip each bite in the accompanying spicy soy sauce and savor just one example of all the goodness that’s coming out Jian Guo’s kitchen.
