An Australian meat pie is a little piece of comfort, with juicy meat and vegetable fillings inside a puff pastry shell. Leave it to an American immigrant to the land down under to found a national chain of fast food joints in honor of the iconic Australian comfort food. Now Wayne Homschek is introducing his bakery and café chain to his native US. Pie Face carries savory and sweet pies, and to help distinguish the fillings there are little faces on each pie, hence the name Pie Face. Savory pies include classics like chunky steak, mince beef and tomato, and chicken and mushroom, but there are also creative variations like Thai chicken curry, tandoori vegetable and Mexican pies. These pies may not be artisanal, but for a quick fix, they are satisfying and pretty fun to eat. Did I mention that they’re open 24 hours, seven days a week? Nothing better than a late-night pie run!
