Ever since a Filipino friend of mine introduced me to the Filipino layered cake called sans rival, I’ve been hooked. The name gives it away: “without rival.” This is a very decadent dessert — comprised of layers of cashew meringue and rich, smooth buttercream — that I can only indulge in once in a while. The crispiness of the meringue contrasts with the buttery smooth frosting. It’s a time-consuming cake to make, but luckily you can find it at Filipino bakeries like Krystal’s Café (which is also a restaurant.)
