Tortilleria Nixtamal

Pozole Soup

Cynthia Sin-Yi Cheng

Snow White Comfort Soup

This might sound crazy, but during the last night of my three-day cleanse in the Hamptons I spent a few hours watching the Food Network. My discovery of Tortilleria Nixtamal came from that evening.

After returning to the city, I had to go check out this Queens Mexican joint just a 20-minute ride from my apartment. The entire vibe of the place is nothing but festive. We ordered everything hot and spicy then decided to get an order of their non-spicy pork pozole broth to go. And, boy, am I glad we did that.

The pozole soup ($6) is a meal in itself. This white broth soup has lots of nixtamalized corn (think of wet popcorn), pork cubes and pork fat! It is served with a crispy tostada and toppings (chopped red radish, shredded lettuce, chopped onions, oregano, black pepper and a wedge of lime), which add not only color to the milky white soup (imparted from the pork bones), but also texture and flavors to complete the dish.
