Petting Zoo

Celia Sin-Tien Cheng

I recently spent the most worthwhile $1.99 on a new iPhone/iPad app by Christoph Niemann called “Petting Zoo.” It’s an interactive picture book that allows you to “pet” 21 different animals by tapping and swiping the illustrations. Like any good book, I find myself coming back to the app and being entertained all over again, often discovering more hidden features. Christoph Niemann’s playful and witty multimedia illustrations are always a joy (check out Abstract City, if you haven’t already), and this first interactive book is equally engaging. The transition animations between each animal and the shifting background colors really bring the petting zoo to life. From rabbit to porcupine to chameleon, every animal is special, but I particularly love the elephant and octopus.
