Miss Lily's Variety

Oxtail Stew

Celia Sin-Tien Cheng

Miss Lily’s Favourite Cakes has expanded, opening Miss Lily’s Variety, a record store with its own radio station, a juice bar and café. Located right next door to the original Miss Lily’s, at the corner of Sullivan and Houston, the more casual eatery took over lunch service from the restaurant and is also open from morning to night (and delivers too). While you can only get alcohol at the restaurant, the menu is the same with the addition of killer juices, of course. My favorite dish is still the oxtail stew. If you’re like me, and love gnawing on bones and adore gelatin-rich meat, then this thick brown sauce version is for you. Served with rice and beans and a side of pineapple slaw, the oxtail stew is flavorful with broad beans and distinct hints of spice, including Scotch bonnet peppers, black pepper, allspice and garlic. The pineapple slaw – slices of pineapple mixed in with a vinegar-based cabbage slaw — isn’t traditional but does add a bit of “island flavor” to this Jamaican dish, providing a burst of refreshment between the heavier bites of stew.
