Soma Chocolatemaker

Mayan Hot Chocolate

Nancy Matsumoto

The liquid chocolate drinks at Soma are billed as “elixirs,” and the word seems highly appropriate, as this rich potion will magically elevate your mood, no matter where it starts out. The melted dark Venezuelan chocolate is goosed with cinnamon, ginger, Madagascar vanilla, orange peel and chili. For a few more cents, you can customize your brew by adding hot milk or hot chocolate. You might also order a bicerin, the Piedmontese name for liquid chocolate mixed with espresso and topped with whole milk or, in this case, semi-whipped cream (4.20 Canadian dollars).

Among Soma’s most popular hard chocolate microbatch bars are the Dark Fire, which mimics the heat and power of the Mayan hot chocolate, and the simple yet surprising Old School, which combines partially ground cocoa nibs and raw organic sugarcane crystals to achieve a crumbly cookie texture with pure chocolaty power.
