Mission Social Hall & Café, the little café inside the Mission Houses Museum, is one of my favorite finds of 2016. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch only, and I try to go there every chance I get. God bless chef Mark Noguchi and his team at Pili Group, who opened the café in 2015 with the mission to reconnect with the historic flavors of Hawaiian cuisine, using local ingredients. The simple menu features daily salads and entree specials, as well as three sandwiches that stay the same: the daily catch BLT, egg salad, and turkey and cranberry. The café caters to the work crowd downtown so daily specials tend to sell out quickly, but I love the sandwiches just as much, so there’s nothing to fret over. Their house-made lemonade with honey and turmeric is also refreshingly addictive. For a full-on immersion into Hawaiian history and culture, visit the museum and have lunch at the café; Iolani Palace and other historic landmarks are also in the area, so make a day of it.
