The Honolulu Museum of Art is also home to North America’s most extensive Islamic art collection: Shangri La. Shangri La was the residence of the late heiress Doris Duke who was enamored with Islamic art and amassed an extraordinary collection based on her own research. If you are visiting Honolulu, be sure to plan ahead; Shangri La is not to be missed, and tours of the property are by appointment only. Duke’s carefully curated collection couldn’t be more striking as it is displayed among the natural beauty of the Diamond Head oceanfront and the house’s courtyard, garden and pool. Shangri La is a true oasis. I have never seen anything like it.
