Makers and Brothers

Irish Crafts and Design

Celia Sin-Tien Cheng

When I think of Irish culture, rich folklore and wonderful beers and whiskeys come to mind, of course, but I rarely think of design. That is until the recent launch of Makers and Brothers, an online shop that focuses on Irish and international craft and design. Brothers Jonathan and Mark of Makers and Brothers selectively source inspirational products designed and made predominantly by local Irish talent. The site not only features beautiful and sometimes quirky objects for sale — from ceramic mugs to enamel tumblers, sheepskin stools to abstract fruit baskets — but also profiles some of the designers to give customers a glimpse of these makers’ processes and inspirations. The venture’s foundation is Irish, but the stage on which it is showcased is international. This is the first online shop I’ve seen that can switch between four different currencies and is supported by express global shipping service. Bravo to the Irish makers and the brothers!
