Since I returned from Taipei, where there is a serious soft-serve craze going on, I’ve been searching for the best soft serve in New York City. For me, the quality of soft serve depends on the ice cream’s flavor and texture. There are several specialty soft-serve stores in the city, but I generally find their often decadent toppings and flavors to be just too heavy in taste. The goat-milk soft serve at Victory Garden, however, is another story. Sophia Brittan, the shop’s founder, was in search of the same qualities I revere in soft serve — light, healthy, local, not processed and neither too sweet nor rich. Brittan took her inspiration from the rich Turkish goat-milk ice cream dondurma and created her own version that’s much lighter in texture. It is not surprising that I have fallen in love with Victory Garden’s soft serve.
Two of the most popular flavors, salted caramel and tangy goat milk, are always on the menu, and there’s also always one type of chocolate flavor available. Other offerings — such as rose petal or the current flavor, blueberry — vary depending on what’s in season at the greenmarket. If you are a cone lover, you have to try Victory Garden’s homemade waffle cones. Gluten-free and only mildly sweet, these cones add the perfect amount of crunch and complementary flavor to this already ideal soft-serve experience.
