I was lucky to receive a box of these Hotel Chocolat Chocolate Caramel Sweethearts as a gift and was charmed by their flavor and packaging. The UK-based Hotel Chocolat produces its own line of chocolate products as well as operates the Chocolate Tasting Club, a 100,000-member strong bloc of chocoholics who receive monthly chocolate samplings. In 2006, the family-owned business purchased its own cocoa plantation, Rabot Estate on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. The company funds sustainable farming projects there, as well as in Ghana, offering high-quality seedlings, technical help and fair trade prices. Each caramel-flavored chocolate heart is engraved with courting hummingbirds, their beaks hovering parallel to each other, surrounded by little hearts and curlicues. Crunchy cocoa crisps, caramelized hazelnut and a spot of cherry powder give these treats the taste, as one friend put it, “of the world’s best gourmet health bar.”
