Did You Say “Cheese Straw Sandwich”?
Who knew you could make a sandwich from a cheese straw? I sure didn’t until I tasted one of Uri Scheft’s creations at his Breads Bakery.
Breads Bakery is known for its cheese straws. The mini sandwiches are made from the Gouda cheese straws, which have an intensely pungent flavor. The salty, crispy and springy texture of the straws makes them perfect, if not an obvious choice, for sandwich bread. And, what goes in between the crusty and fluffy bread is shockingly simple: cream cheese (a very, very light and airy version that almost tastes like fresh goat cheese), cherry tomatoes, red onions, very ripe avocado, cilantro and jalapeños. The fresh ingredients are a tasty balance to the savory and cheesy flavor of the straws.
Located right across the street from Union Square Cafe, Breads Bakery is the ideal spot for any avid Union Square Greenmarket-goer (like myself!) to grab a bite before grocery hunting.
