To me, the vibrant colors of this relish, as well as its Bollywood themed-packaging, are a refreshing change of pace from the clean, modernist take on most “artisanal, small-batch” products these days. Several years ago, Reeta Gyamiani, the creator of this delicious condiment, immersed herself in cooking as a way to distract herself from the grief of losing someone dear to her. Her most popular recipe became the basis for Relish the Love, a line of Indian relishes, starting with Bombay to Goa, an eggplant relish that includes turmeric, mustard seeds, cumin and other spices. It’s savory with hints of sweetness, a little spicy and incredibly addictive: after receiving a jar from Reeta, I could not help but put it on everything, from omelettes to hot dogs and pasta. I even used the relish as taco filling, augmented with avocado and tomatoes, and added a fried egg to balance the heat (see image below). Reeta’s passionate personality comes through in this relish, and when I taste the bounty of rich flavors, I feel like I am celebrating life and love with her. If you can tolerate a little spice, you might just end up putting this on everything, too. For something unique that warms the heart, consider these jars of Relish the Love for entertaining and the perfect gift.
