I’m a BLT fiend! As a child, I loved going to the supermarket with my mother, and I would always take charge of finding the perfect pack of bacon. I never outgrew my love for BLTs, but I find that as simple as this sandwich is, not everyone does it well. I was not surprised to find the BLT at 606 R&D to be simply superb. This new restaurant in Prospect Heights, owned by former City Bakery alums Ilene Rosen and Sara Dima, doesn’t disappoint. You’ll find the BLT on their lunch and brunch menus for the entirety of summer tomato season. Imagine: thin crispy slices of North Country’s applewood smoked bacon layered with sliced organic heirloom tomatoes from Riverview Organic, lettuce and a slather of mayonnaise — which I was certain was homemade, but turned out to be good ol’ Hellman’s — on grilled Orwasher’s Cabernet Rustica, a hearty country white bread. There really couldn’t be a more perfect summer sandwich, with rich smoky flavor balanced by the fresh sweetness of in-season tomatoes. Catch some rays in 606 R&D’s back garden while sampling Rosen’s menu of comfort foods.
