It’s been 20 years since I visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. I was awed the first time, and 20 years later, it’s still so spectacular to drive into the city and catch sight of Frank Gehry’s signature statement in the middle of a formerly industrial city. Santiago Calatrava’s footbridge next to the museum was equally as memorable, though a little worn down with age now. Jenny Holtzer and Richard Serra’s permanent installations are still my favorites, and at the time of visit I loved Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Now’s the Time and Shahzia Sikander’s Indo-Persian video art exhibit Parallax. Bilbao is about a 90-minute drive from San Sebastian and is another wonderful day trip for art lovers.
