If you are looking for a boutique hotel in Houston, I recommend Hotel Icon. Located downtown in the business district, it’s convenient for business travelers and also ideal because the neighborhood is considerably quiet at night and on the weekends, ensuring restful nights of sleep — an aspect I always judge a hotel on. The building was originally constructed for the Union National Bank in 1912 — the vault doors now serve as a decorative element behind the front desk. The building was repurposed as a 135-room hotel in 2004 with décor that is modern, lush and romantic, while retaining a bit of Texas flair. I love the feel of the elevator corridor in the lobby, with its mix of wood, glass and textile elements, as well as a gorgeous chandelier that imparts a distinct charm and, again, a sense of classy romance. That small area of respite leads into the hotel restaurant, Line and Lariat. The rooms are spacious, modern in design and detail but filled with warmth. It was a bonus to learn that the hotel is also only five minutes away from Oxheart restaurant.
