La Contra

Mexican Wine

Celia Sin-Tien Cheng

With all the innovative high-end dining in Mexico City, including restaurants like Pujol, Quintonil, Biko and MeroToro, I naturally began looking for corresponding innovation in the Mexican wine scene. When I probed a little, friends in the food and wine industry pointed me to La Contra, a boutique wine store that specializes in Mexican wine. I found not only one of the wines I had at Pujol with dinner, but also some interesting Mexican sparkling wine to bring to a house party. Many of the other wine stores I visited were not very inspiring, but it’s good to know that La Contra has several locations throughout the country. I was glad to visit this one in Roma, my favorite neighborhood, where I also found energetic galleries, shops and bars.
